Spanish Royals Celebrate New Year's Military Parade 2018 at the Royal Palace on January 6, 2018 in Madrid, Spain.

Spain's former king Juan Carlos I, who turned 80 yesterday, made a public comeback with his son Felipe VI today, at a trying time for Spain after its wealthy Catalan region attempted to break away, and where 47 percent of voters want to live in an independent, monarchy-free republic.

The furor has also put King Juan Carlos pictured with Queen Letizia of Spain back in the spotlight. Former King Juan Carlos was credited for leading Spain to democracy after decades of dictatorship under Francisco Franco.
